Well Far Cry 2. There's a war in Africa and you choose a mercenary from a list of few, to go sort out some nasty little man called The Jackal, who's doing naughty things like supplying weapons to both sides. Soon after you arive at the hotel you have a malaria attack and wake up next to The Jackal himself. He doesn't kill you because he's such a nice guy, bombs goes off, you escape and find employment with a faction. From there, missions, scouting for diamonds and generally f**king up the lives of all for a laugh is part of what to do in Far Cry 2. Simple.

Don't believe that this is another first person shooter...well it is, and doesn't really bring anything new to the table, apart from having to take a malaria pill during battle when having a malaria stroke, somewhat annoying but good as the player has to shift priority in the midst of bullets and explosions, to saving themself. It's easy to consider Farc Cry 2 a sandbox game as Africa seems to be completely crammed onto the disc. I haven't seen a fraction of it yet, but believe moi when I say, 'VECHILES ARE BETTER THAN FEET'. I forgot where I parked my truck (well, which tree I wrapped it round) and decided to walk to my destination. Bad move. It took an hour to get there and had a malaria attack as I arrived too. Luckily save points and safe houses are in key locations to make sure deaths aren't too fustrating during missions.

Gameplay rocks. Bullets whizz past you, fires spread across grass and trees, and explosions cause the ground to shake and various debris to fly all over the place in such a manner of a fireball you'll scold yourself. AI is smart too. They'll hide, take cover, run about, flank and generally snipe you to death before you can go 'OUCH!' The enemies are also inhuman, with the ability to absorb various bullets. I decided to be a bit sadistic with one guy. Shot him in left leg, then the right leg, then the right arm, then the left leg again, AND HE STILL STOOD!! ON NORMAL DIFFICULTY TOO! Either enemies are Terminators, or I'm a shockingly bad shot. My favourite part of gameplay is definately the very visual way of healing and collecting ammo. When in the red part of your healht gauge, you have to do major surgery. This can involve seeing the removal of bullets from hands with plyers, sliding out shrapnel from your leg, patting a fire out on your body, to twisting your arm back into it's socket. Yummy...

What else does FC2 have in it's toy box? Well there's a little something called the map editor, that itself is worth £30 of the game price tag. You can pretty much make anything, and you've probaly seen the Effiel Tower map as proof of this. I'm not too skilled in it yet, but I managed to make a flood stricked airfield for my friend to explore in thirty minutes. Not being able to test with AI dudes is a damper but no big loss.

There are a few problems. A sort of fast travelling feature could be welcome as boredom from long travelling is a problem. Mission data is a bit sparse on what to do. It took me an hour to realise that ordering a gun over the Internet completed the mission, however the mission statement told me to come back later to see the gun shop owner. It's a tad odd that there a very few to no animals in the landscape, especially for Africa. A very major disapointment is that THERE IS NO SPLIT SCREEN MULTIPLAYER OF ANY KIND exsists, with the only non-online way of doing so being a LAN connection. Apart from that Far Cry 2 could be considered a shorter but more down to earth version of Fallout 3, but still worth the time you put into it and online multiplayer. Now, how come killing zombie Africans causes more contravesry than killing African soldiers?

+ Graphics are awesome                     - No split screen
+ Amazing gameplay                             - Enemies are bullet sponges
+ Cool map making and sharing        - Takes ages to explore on foot

Tomfoolery says: GET IT, RENT IF UNSURE

REVIEW UPDATE

* I have found that animals only appear in vast landscape areas, but do appear more often. I would like to apologise to the zebra and antalope that I ran over, even though they were running at ME!

*I forgot to mention two other things; enemy guns can jam as they are rusty, but vary in awesomness, so unless you maintain weapons you've bought you've got to use these unreliable metal scraps some time or later. Point two is that missions can last up to an forty five minutes if you decently prepare a way in, a stealth method, a run and gun method, and an escape route to a hideout may prove tedious, but rewarding.

*By the way, I'd like to thank Hozt for getting my blog editor working. Say goodbye to my legendary blocks of text reviews!

I bought Gears 2 at 12:01 a.m. Friday, and beat it at 11:45 p.m. on Saturday. The MP is glitchy. They still have some hit detection issues, the shotgun is extremely inconsistent, and the matchmaking gets hung up on every other try. I'm waiting for an MP patch before I put too much more time into it.

Having said that, I don't think I can recommend anyone spend $60 on Far Cry 2 either. It's good, but TomFoolery brings up some valid points, and no fast travel is a big no-no in a world this big. They could do like Bethesda does, in that you have to visit a place before you can fast-travel to it. Then again, I have Fallout 3 on the brain right now.

Maybe you should buy Fallout 3! smile Still my GOTY so far.

I'd say FC2 is worth $45. The graphics are pretty good, and it feels like you're in an African country. I haven't set any grass on fire yet because I'm afraid of killing myself! I've seen videos of how it spreads and it's pretty cool.

Gears 2 is worth a rental, but it's overrated otherwise. Unless, of course, you were a huge fan of the original, in which I can say that they made some improvements.

i enjoyed the single player from gears one, but didnt like the MP, it was choppy, and had no repswns or party system.

I think that I would play fallout 3 before fears 2, more than likely, but after fable2, i am gonna be ready to light shome shit up with guns!

cool!

my wife surprised me with Farcry2 preorder edition for our anniversary! Now im in a conundrum. At this point im wanting to go ahead and finish Fable2, i love the game, but Farcry2 is calling. Tomfoolery, can you save your game at any time in Farcry2? even midmission? I hope so, i HATE save points, like GTA4, you should ALWAYS be able to save your game anytime, anywhere!

Tomfoolery, when I get on Farcry 2, if you are still playing, add me to your friends list (

Save points are avalibale in every faction house, hideout, gun shop, and yes you can save mid-mission but only when you've achieved an objective. For example, one mission you have to sneek into a villa. You get to save before it from a nearby safehouse, and also get to save after you've got into the villa and spoken to the man in the objective.

Also I should be on Xbox Live before Xmas time, as soon as I get hold of a 15 metre ethernet cable to conect my 360 in my bedroom to the modem in the office.

I'll be happy to add you.

you know, i think the weapons are incredibly inaccurate in Farcry2, (well, maybe too realistic) run n gun rarely works, the ak is a mess!)
